My name is Steve Hill. I am the owner of Hammer Sports Relics born and raised and still located in North Canton, Ohio. I have always been a big fan of all types of sports but my main passion would be football. Football is very important to the residents of Stark County, going all the way back to one of the oldest high school football rivalries in the country - That would be the Canton McKinley Bulldogs and the Massillon Tigers (1894 - present). Canton is also the home of the first "official" professional football team, the Canton Bulldogs. Their star player Jim Thorpe was the first player inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame located in Canton.
I played football in school but never made it to college. One of my fondest football memories is of my grandmother Dorothy telling me how she would regularly wait on (whom she called Jiimy) Jim Thorpe at one of the downtown Canton eateries. I also remember my father (Clyde Hill) taking me to all of the Professional Football Hall of Fame parades where we saw Jim Thorpe, Guy Chamberlin, Red Grange, Bronco Nagurski, Elroy "crazy legs" Hirsch, Sid Luckman, Sammy Baugh, etc etc etc. I can still see them smiling and waving from the back of convertibles. They were like super hero's to me! Going to the HOF parades were one of the best times of my young life and only succeeded at fueling my passion for football even more.
I stared out collecting antique sports items around 1998. I learned a lot on leather restoring from a few area leather experts but was very green behind the ears. After time, I became more skilled after doing countless numbers of helmets, melon footballs, etc. I would restore all the leather footballs, helmets, laced basketballs, ball gloves, etc, that I found at local garage sales, auctions, estate sales, the internet, etc. In 2004 I needed a few extra dollars to buy a guitar I really wanted. So, I sold a few of my restored items on Ebay and was blown away on much money I made on them. That is where Hammer Sports Relics all stared. In 2011 I decided to quit my regular job and make this my full time employment.
I am fully committed to providing the best restorations available! Every item is very important to me whether it's a high end top dollar early 1900's leather helmet or a simple 1960's baseball glove. Please, take a moment to browse the Before and After restorations page to see examples of what I can do with various sports collectibles.
